Autumn Equinox
23rd September 2014
The opening of this website has coincided with this year’s autumn equinox! …a time of balance - of equal day and equal night - and of celebration and giving thanks; as we look back at the valuable lessons of the past and plant the seeds for all new enterprises of the future.
In the northern hemisphere we are all aware of the shortening daylight hours as nature herself prepares for winter: trees and plants are ending this year’s cycle of growth displaying their wondrous autumnal colours bursting with oranges, golds and rusts and producing seed pods, nuts and berries as birds and butterflies are migrating southwards and animals develop their winter coats. It is a time for rejoicing in the earth’s natural bounty and in the welcome return, particularly here in Somerset, of the starlings who will be arriving in their great sculptural swarms at the Levels once again.
In these ‘sketchblog’ pages I will be sharing visual treasures; photos, random images, sketches, some preparatory work and thoughts – gathering material from which to work - as I do in my own sketchbooks.
